And on today’s show, we are catching up with Kelly, who is the keynote of day two for Agency Transformation Live. She has an inspiring story. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Welcome to a conversation today with usual Mr. Lee Jackson. And today we have my very good friend, it’s Kelly Baader. How are you?
Kelly: I’m doing well, Lee. So nice to be here.
Lee: It’s lovely to have you back on again. Yeah, yeah, we just had a lovely chat just before we hit record. I told you I was a little bit tired. Uh, we had a great chat. You built me up and encouraged me. And then you pointed out that I’d gone from talking nice and slowly to suddenly talking at a million miles an hour. So I think the first lesson of the day is if you ever feel a bit down or tired, talk with a good friend like Kelly and they you’ll get energy from from your friendship. So I definitely appreciate you and and having you on the show today, folks. If you don’t know who Kelly is, you definitely need to check out episode 188. Kelly, I would love it if you could just give us a little bit of an introduction to yourself for people who haven’t listened to that episode, so let us know who you are, what it is you do, etc. and then we’ll get into the meat and potatoes of the podcast.
Kelly: Sure. You know, I was just a child of mysteries. I was born in the time at a place that when baby girls were not very much and no need to invest us anything, especially the education. So growing up and still about nearly, you know, two decades of family violence, uh, sexual abuse, I there was a dark time that I never know that what can happen to me in the night because my mother and her drunken, you know, drunken boyfriends have that say, you know, and so later on, you know, on the career, try to climb the corporate ladder. And I was, you know, fighting the male domination environment. And we’re talking about like, if you guys ever watch a movie called Hidden Figures, basically it’s the real hero behind the NASA, basically African American ladies and the main character, Katherine. She had to run a couple of blocks in order to go to ladies room. In between the job. And I had a similar situation that I was the only female executive, and we had a board meeting and I went to the meeting in the coffee break. There was no ladies room on the floor. And so that kind of thing. And later on, you know, I started my business, uh, the coaching consulting business since 2008. And I was told a lot of, uh, you know, as well, you know, such as that your English accent. So therefore, nobody will read your book, nobody will give you business and you surely can forget about your podcast, that kind of thing. And now here we go. We are here. And I am Lee Jackson’s podcast.

Lee: Well, also, Kelly, you’re going to be our opening keynote at the agency Transformation Live for day two. And that’s incredible. From being told English people are not going to listen to you to being on a stage here in the UK doing our opening keynote. That’s exciting. Can you tell us what it is you’re going to be talking about?
Kelly: Well, I don’t know what going to your head, Lee, that you you are so courageous to have me as your keynote.
Lee: I saw you on stage at YouPreneur. I know how good you are.
Kelly: Okay, okay, so kidding aside. Uh, kidding aside, I’m super, super honored. And, um, so just to ease a little bit, your listeners mind that. Okay. This is not my first time or second time speaking on the stage, because I’m trained as a first batch of John C Maxwell’s coaching speakers. So. So for those of you who bought the ticket, you know that we’re not shocked by our joke.
Lee: And we’re in good Hands.
Kelly: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. The topic is dare to serve the number one way to build a profitable business you love. And you know, the thing is, especially for this event, I would say 90% of the attendees is from agencies. It’s creative entrepreneurs. Right. And in today’s day and age, you know, did you know that you are under attack as creative entrepreneurs? What I mean by that is a lot of things. One is, you know, to be able to creative to create something awesome. Yeah, we need bandwidth. We need space, you know, physically, mentally, spiritually and we need time. But just look at how we spend time scrolling around on your devices and let alone it basically kill the focus and kill our ability to think, which is the number one difference between us human and the whole other animal kingdom. And the thing is, though, even when the creative entrepreneurs cannot think because we all kind of always in the reactive mode, right? Yeah. It’s like all clients with the Porsche that is. Well, okay, I need to the deadlines here and stuff like that. And it’s very difficult to produce the content you are proud of. Not to mention, you know, that clients are happy with, but you are proud. And also we’re going to also discuss a little bit about in this presentation that how then you can stand out in the noisy world so you can attract the right clients and without selling your souls.
Lee: That’s good.
Kelly: You know
Lee: With Regards to the the attention as well, I mean, I was I was watching a documentary the other day on, on my device via YouTube and they had my attention, but they were explaining how there are so many, there are so many online platforms that are that make money from our attention. So Facebook want us to spend as much time as possible on Facebook, and they will continuously evolve their algorithm to keep you inside of their platform. They want you to watch the videos in their platform. They want you to be constantly scrolling. They want to serve you information and statuses that attract your attention and take you away from whatever else you are doing, because the time you spend on that platform means they are making money. And that’s just one thing that really hit home with me the other day with regards to what am I focusing all of my energy and attention on and, you know, realizing and seeing in myself, wow, I actually spend way too much time on these social media apps. I’ve I’ve had to take a massive step back from, you know, just spending too much time on actually, YouTube. YouTube and Facebook are my two biggest problems. So I’ve had I’ve actually had to I’ve had to force myself to take time away from both. I’ve got an app now on my computer that allows me up to 30 minutes in a morning and 30 minutes in an afternoon on Facebook, and then I just have to come off of it.
Kelly: Mhm.
Lee: Just just to help me to focus on some of the more important things.
Kelly: Yeah. Actually attention is the true currency today. Yeah. You know so that’s a flip that the other side is as entrepreneurs right. As agencies. How then we can have that attention. And and that’s what we’re going to talk about. You gotta have the event to figure it out.
Lee: No, absolutely. Well, that’s that’s true. So I mean, Facebook, they get my attention because they know about me. They they know that I am their target audience. They have algorithms that look at the way I consume their information, and they continue to serve me more information and ads as well. That attracts me. That’s because they they know who I am. They’ve used technology to do that. But equally, it’s so important, isn’t it, that we know our own clients and to attract clients attention, to provide them with the services that we offer. We’re not necessarily being bad at all, not like Facebook, where we’re trying to attract those clients because we have something that’s going to help them, that’s going to solve their problems, that’s going to add value into their lives as well. And I’m looking forward to the part of your talk where you’re saying that how to attract the right clients without selling your souls. And I think that’s a very common feeling for a lot of creatives that we we feel very drained by a lot of our clients because we feel we are just simply exchanging our time for money, that our skills have become a purchasable commodity. So it’s however many hours of design or programming, etc., and we lose that sense of of value in ourselves. And it massively affects our our own motivation, our self-esteem. And it also affects the work that we do with our clients. I can just think back years ago, when I was literally being paid by the hour for development that I was doing, and it was just so soul destroying, and often if there was a mistake made, I’d end up then doing more work for free because I felt bad about it. The client didn’t value me either, because they saw me as an hourly commodity and it was just a it was a really difficult time and I was doing 18 to 20 hours a day sometimes. So I’m certainly looking forward to to hearing your encouragement. And and it’s why it’s the day two opener as well I definitely want to start off with a kind of a call to action on day two to encourage people to to push on a really, really appreciate that.
Kelly: Oh, you are so welcome.
Lee: Now, you were over in a social media world. How did that go?
Kelly: It was Awesome. It really, uh, it’s a huge event, right? It’s about 5000 people. I think it’s Insane. But yeah, I know it’s insane. So you really need to know that which sections you want to go because it’s a it’s a multi tracks. It’s not just a single track. And I think this time I personally I did it differently. Uh, you know, in the old days when you spend so much resources, you go all the way there and you try to go to as many sessions as you can. But this time I feel like I just want to go to the some sections. I feel I need to go. Yeah. And it’s interesting when I do that, the couple of things happen. One, that on the way to because I was in between the session And then that was a highlight. I was looking also for my speakers for my coming Christian SEO summit and, uh, you know, a lot of influencers there. If you want to try to speak to them, you have to go to the session and afterwards, you know, you have to queue with other people and in between the session, because I did not go some of the sections and I was in ladies room, and when I was in the ladies room, I went in and because it’s in between sessions, so there was nobody else except me and another lady, she was standing there and kind of have a last minute, you know, makeup kind of thing. And suddenly and I was about to go into the store and she called my name and oh.
Lee: 5000 people,
Kelly: oh, 5000 people. Right? Yeah.
Kelly: And so I turned around and I look at her and she say, Kelly, right? I say.
Kelly: Yes, Amy. Right?
Kelly: She said yeah. Amy Porterfield.
Lee: No way.
Kelly: Yeah.
Lee: Oh my gosh, that’s amazing.
Kelly: Because if you want to try to like, uh, you know, line up with other people after her session, you can forget about it. Right. So it Was I Was it I was divine, it was pretty cool. Uh, and then we had a little chat. You know, she she mentioned because I’m. I’m her student for long, you know, different programs, but but, boy, she only have, like, a couple of thousands of students. Right. But we did check a little bit two years ago, you know, in the social media marketing world as well. And so it’s very nice that she remember me. So we have a chat and then she kind of also know what I’m about. And so yeah. So you know that kind of thing. It’s kind of interesting. But I gotta say though, in the most serious note, the whole social media marketing world, the opening keynote from Michael Stelzer to the closing keynote from my good friend Mark Schaefer, who is such an influencer. All come from one thing and one thing only. You know where Mike went to about how Facebook’s history till now and Mark closing with, you know, his book called, uh, Marketing Rebellion basically talked about now the consumer is crying out. Respect me. So he was talking about that. You don’t need a lot of people. You don’t need a lot of clients. But what you do need, it’s a small group of clients that you can serve really, really well. Because now, after all the acceleration of the marketing, people are tired of quote unquote marketing what people really want, it’s that really authentic connections. And that is a part of my presentation as well as awesome.
Lee: I’m loving all these little previews as well. There’s two things I’ve learned from what you’ve just said. Number one, when you go to an event, hang out in the toilet. You meet good people.
Kelly: Yes, that’s. Number one people number one.
Lee: So unfortunately, I think agency transformation live. There’s going to be no one in the main room. Everyone’s going to be in the restrooms and it’ll be all Kelly’s fault. And then but the second thing and I and I do really agree with this, is you only need a small, you know, a small group of customers that you can serve really, really well and that know, like and trust you, that love you, etc. that’s something that I’m a massive believer in. I get so frustrated when I see these online courses on how to sell programs and network, you know, at low cost, where you can get thousands of people and become a millionaire and have this car and have all of this sort of stuff and, and, you know, and, and, and pitch this course or pitch that to them or pitch this to them and have a look at what they’re doing and then pitch this to them, etc., and just make loads and loads of money out of all these people. I hate that idea, whereas I absolutely love the idea of having small community, a small community of people that I can connect with that I know, and that I can build up a, you know, a good business where I’m adding value into their lives and equally, they’re adding value into us. For example, last night we had our we do a weekly call as part of our premium community. We’ve got a small premium community of agency owners, and we do a weekly call every Monday. And it’s absolutely wonderful. It’s only meant to be an hour. Sorry, it’s meant to be 30 minutes long. We always go on for at least an hour and a half.
Lee: Because we just Love to chat. We’ve built up relationships, people, uh, feel free to ask questions and we just all get stuck in. And it’s just a wonderful feeling to have a small community of people that, you know, that are building their businesses, and we’re all able to add value into each other’s lives. So I’m a massive believer in that sort of thing. I think going back to Facebook again, we get bombarded, don’t we, with all of these messages about how what people perceive to be success and success needs to be. You have a massive I on a YouTube channel with over 2 million subscribers. And you’re pictured on, uh, you know, these, these Instagram walls at these big events, etc. whereas that’s not really success. Success for me is being able to help people achieve their goals in life, is to be able to coach people, to be able to build people up, to encourage people, and of course, to be able to build up my own business as well, doing that which serves my family as well, which, uh, I’m sure you’re on the same page there.
Kelly: Yeah And I think, Lee, I think I do want to kind of make one thing clear. I don’t want people to feel like we are against big number or success. That’s not what we are against. What we. Yeah. What we are saying is though, a lot of vanity number. Right. Flying around in the internet and, you know, I mean, if you go to my social media, in Instagram or Facebook, everywhere that my number aren’t big are tiny, teeny, tiny or teeny. Doesn’t matter. Right.
Lee: You go on. Works teeny tiny. Actually works as Well.
Kelly: Oh. Okay. Great. And so.
Kelly: But, uh, my clients, they all joking around, you know, when they give me reference, uh, or referral to their friends, and they always say, like, I did not know that till some clients told me, they say, okay, when you go to check her out just now, the number is not that big, but she got money. So so what we are saying here is, you know, really just be faithful and what you are called to do. Stay your land and you serve a heck of it, of your clients, the right ones. And it will expand from there. Right. I just want to make this clear. I don’t want people to feel like, oh, we just want you to stay small. That’s not what we are saying. But what we are saying is that phrase that you only need 1000 true fans. It’s it’s very true. You don’t have to try to compare with other people. That’s the thing. Comparison and imposter syndrome. That is a killer of your joy for everything.
Lee: Absolutely right.
Lee: Yeah, that’s absolutely the point. You know, and people have built up very big businesses by starting with that mindset of starting with just the few people. Yeah, and that’s been my point. I get so frustrated saying, oh, you’re not successful if you don’t have thousands of followers and you don’t have this massive community. Success is being in your niche and building up a strong business. You can have massive numbers eventually and certainly be millionaires as well. I would love to be a millionaire because I would go and buy a house right next to Disneyworld. That’s one of my mind, you know? It’s still that’s still a plan.
Lee: So absolutely.
Kelly: Okay.
Lee: Dream. That’s my dream. That’s what I’m going to do. But at the same time, I recognize that I can start with a nice small community and add value into their lives and build up my business that way, rather than trying to go after what is perceived to be the way to do it. So to millions of people, build your network, you know, and have this, uh, you know, and this will give you a Ferrari. I feel like it’s just doing it for the wrong reasons.
Kelly: Yeah, yeah
