Lee:
Welcome to the Agency Trailblazer podcast. This is your host, Lee. And on today’s show, we are repurposing quite literally a livestream with me, myself and I, and also Nicole Osborne. How are you? Oh, sorry, Frau Osborne, how are you?
Nicole:
Lee, thank you so much. And thanks for having me. And I love that you call me Frau Osborne.
Lee:
It’s fine. I learnt it last year, was When we interviewed you in episode 185, of which I highly recommend, folks, you go ahead and listen to. And if you are an Agency Trailblazer alumni, that’s the premium community member, I also recommend you go ahead and check out Nicole’s talk over in agencytransformation.academy, where she shared some really cool stuff in 2019, I think it was, about David Adlerhoff. And then if you were part of Agency Transformation Live 2020 this year and you missed With her talk, please, please, please go and watch the replay over on Agency Transformation Live and go and check it out. And please do connect with her and tell her what was your biggest takeaway, either from 2019 or from 2020 or from episode 185, or what was your biggest takeaway from today and over the next few days? Because Nicole approached me after ATL 2020 and said, I really feel like there is something that we can share where we can add tonnes and tonnes of value in into the community. And she wrote out this great plan of which she got super excited about, and we actually conversed about in GIFs, including the best GIF ever, which was this bouncing up and down, elephant on a trampoline, which absolutely cracked me up.
Lee:
But the reason Nicole is here today is so that we can share with you what is planned for next week. We’re going to talk about each day. I’m going to interview Nicole and ask her what the thought process is, what we’re going to be expecting from each and every one. And then I would encourage you, folks, if you can get involved next week, it’s all completely free. We’re not selling you anything. This is just something fun that we can do to help people connect with their audience. And you’ll all remember, in fact, we talked about this, didn’t we, Nicole, on the podcast 185 of where I talked about how I showed up originally, and you absolutely cracked up at the video of me in a student time talking like a robot and not even moving my arm.
Nicole:
I still crack up when I see that, I have to say, everyone, you have got to check that out.
Lee:
So it’s my favourite video. I share it periodically. It’s like, oh, let’s all laugh at me, but let’s learn the lesson.
Nicole:
Absolutely. It’s all about the anti-version of you, right? Exactly. And that is the anti-version of you, how you don’t want to come across nowadays. And you really don’t, I’m pleased to say.
Lee:
Yes, exactly. And that is actually a very big part of what you have planned for us next week. So without further ado, could you tell us a little bit about the thought process and what the programme is going to entail the next five days from the eighth of June.
Nicole:
Absolutely. Well, I am so excited about this because I’ve been in a really lucky position to meet many of your community members. And as a previous marketing director myself, I’ve worked for a fair bit of website agency owners on websites. And I know what it’s like when you have a marketing director or a company owner and you choose a provider. So meeting your community, everyone has got the most amazing tech skills, design skills, and you have beautiful websites. But the one thing I feel everyone can make so much more is actually themselves as a marketing tool. And I know, I generally know that sounds a little bit douchey because we don’t like to talk about ourselves. We just take ourselves for granted. So I’ve worked on this five-day Wunderstar’s challenge, really using my experience of working with all my Wunderstars coaching clients today with actually members from your community to help them step by step to look what makes them different, to bring out their stories and to really make an impact. And I know for my own business journey, it’s made a huge impact. If you think about it, there’s so many personal branding of social media coaches out there, and I always think that’s enough to cake around that.
Nicole:
But we need to really be remarkable for people to remember us because the right audience comes to us, our network, we commends us, so we get all these lovely referrals, but you’ve got to be memorable. So as you said earlier, I do talk about being from Germany. I do talk about I’m being a little bit mad for David Hassel. It’s slightly embarrassing, but I’ve been very strategic about it. And since I have, people really do remember me. It is my personal brand. The good thing is there’s lots of funny stereotypes about Germans, but there’s also really good ones. So with this challenge, obviously it’s summer. So I want people to have some fun. So you’ve seen all the daily tasks, and they’re not difficult. They’re really quick things to do, but they’re really healthy from going to a point where you’re like, What’s all this about? I don’t want to share any stories, to actually figuring out what makes you different. And then to pick those stories you want to share with your audience. And yes, I will make people think about lollypops and cupcakes. But what I find with this, when you have a bit of fun, you’re more likely to participate in a challenge and really give something of yourself which perhaps you’d normally like to hide away from.
Nicole:
And to make this really efficient, because as you said, us Germans, we are efficient. Do you know everyone who participates every day will be entered into a price draw so that at the end of it, everyone who’s done it and has a chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher.
Lee:
You heard it here first, £150,000 Amazon voucher. Sorry. What?
Nicole:
What? Don’t Correct me.
Lee:
Sorry, £50. That’s £50.00. Amazon voucher terms and conditions apply. Absolutely. You have to take part. That’s one of the terms.
Nicole:
Lots of fun and lots of practical steps because you know I I realised that lots of free webinars out there. You hold a webinar for an hour and half another person just introduces themselves, which is great, but that’s just not me. I like to share actionable steps. I know Lee, you’re all about small achievable actions lead to big change. So it really fits with that ethos as well.
Lee:
Well, what’s been designed is essentially five days of you will come online, live in the group, not necessarily with me, it will be you, and you’ll be sharing some initial thoughts, etc. And then you’ll be setting people up for this is the task that I would love you to do. And the place that you’re going to be able to do those tasks is going to be in the comments, which makes it super, super easy. This means you can come in, watch the short video, read some of the text that will accompany the video, and then answer either the questions or post the GIF or whatever easy, easy job it is that we can do. So what I would love for to do, Nicole, is just do a really high level on what people can expect for each day. And then obviously that’s going to wet people’s appetite, but it’s also going to get people thinking in advance. And if you’re listening to this as a podcast, I would encourage you to go ahead and listen to episode number 185, like I said earlier, because there are some real gold nuggets in there. And really consider, how does your own personal brand show up?
Lee:
Do you have a personal brand that you- Biscuit. Will wait. You can have biscuits. Biscuit, absolutely. You can have three biscuits because I’m really generous. Make sure they’re chocolate biscuits, extra sugary, so that you can… This is the one… Do you remember that scene in the news when the little kid, baby, walked in, and then his mom’s trying to crawl in in the background.
Nicole:
I’m just, yet here, phone, biscuits, go.
Lee:
I thought it was hilarious. Right, bribe. Okay, so if you’re on the podcast right now. We’re going to leave this in. What happened was Nicole’s little guy just came in asking for chocolate biscuits, and she tried bribe him with the phone. That was beautiful.
Nicole:
Falling off my own chair and not getting on the microphone.
Lee:
She did. That was great. If you want to see that, guys, just head on over to the Facebook group. It’s agency, trailblazer.com/group. Come and join the group because we have a great time in here. Anyway, so what I would encourage you to do, listen to episode number 185 and listen to some of the Nuggets of Wisdom and then consider whether or not you are currently hiding behind the brand of your business, be it an agency, a consultancy, whatever that is. I know, and I shared, that I actually hid for a while behind a brand. Then I tried to show up, but didn’t show up as me. I was actually hiding behind a façade of someone that I was creating. I think we’re all guilty of that because a lot of us don’t feel like we can show up as us. I really do believe that what’s going to happen at the end of the five days is Nicole is essentially going to help you unpack who you are and help you show up as you, which is going to be so freeing. So Nicole, day one, what can we expect?
Nicole:
So day one, you just described a guy in your video who’s wearing that shirt at your brother’s place and you’re being very staffy, like you know what I might be saying. So day one is just about helping everyone to come up with their own anti-version of their self. So how do they not want to come across? How would that anti-version work with their clients? And it’s really just three little questions. And I’m asking people just to put down a bullet point or a short video or even a GIF. But the reason why I’m asking you is once you start thinking about how you don’t want to come across, it’s so much easier to define how you want to come across. So just another example you mentioned yourself. So for me, I used to always wear suits for my work. I would never laugh with any jokes for German stereotypes. I’m really so serious and formal. And obviously, that’s exactly how I’m not nowadays.
Lee:
You’d have hated me, by the way, with all my German stereotypes.
Nicole:
So the first step, really easy, just about putting into words what the anti-version of you is, how you do not want to come across.
Lee:
Yeah. No, that’s awesome.
Nicole:
Really easy peasy, right? So easy.
Lee:
As an exercise, I will quickly share with you also my Auntie Lee, which was, and I used to play this role all the time, I was always wearing a suit and a tie, even in the height of summer, sweating like a big. Again, I didn’t laugh. I didn’t crack any jokes. I was always trying to be very formal. I was trying to be very safe, very serious, very brainy and clever, etc. So that people would really feel like I was this solid, reliable businessman. And I was actually really boring and utterly hated it. And I even showed up in video form in that way, which we’ll make sure we share in the show notes of this episode as well. So that’s day one. It’s going to encourage you to think about either what are you doing that you know is not you, but equally what just represents the opposite of you. And it’s such a great exercise.
Nicole:
It takes the woo away because I know people think, well, what’s this all about? But it is showing up as ourselves, really. Absolutely. So we get there by just thinking about how we do not want to come across. So I think we’re going to have some fun with that one.
Lee:
Absolutely. So we’re going to have fun. And absolutely, during that, I’m going to be taking part in every single one of these because I want to be open and honest. I’m actually going through a personal branding exercise myself. And Nicole has been helping me with that, and so has Shane with regards to the actual brand elements, etc. And I think I know who I am, but I’m still going through this exercise of making sure that I’m showing up not fake and making sure I’m showing up as me. And by doing that, I know I’m going to attract people who want to work with me because one of the lessons I learned many years ago was I was attracting the wrong type of client. So day two, what are we going to do in day two?
Nicole:
So day two is all about a positive microphone. And what works really well here, I’m asking you to actually just think about three to five things you are really proud of. And it could be anything from your work, it could be your family life. Because let’s face it, as business owners, as agency owners, we are a person, so we’ve got to look after ourselves. So it’s really easy. I’m really just asking people to think three to five things that I’m really, really proud of because I want people to be in a positive frame of mind because it’s funny, we take ourselves for granted. And then I talk to people about this. I had this Wunderstar lady, and she’d actually worked in digital marketing for nearly 20 years, and she never mentioned it anywhere. And many of your social media are specialists. It’s a really good thing to have that expansive experience. So what are you proud of? What have you achieved? So feel good factor. So I think we’re going to see lots of positive things in your community because I know you’re also waiting for them to take action. So I can’t wait for that day.
Nicole:
And again, really easy, really, really short because I know everyone is busy. So our intention was really to make this as simple as possible.
Lee:
It could literally be two or three bullet points, couldn’t it, in the comments to say, I did this and I did this. Job done. You’ve actually nailed it. But the result of that is that it’s forced you to think about those positive things and that does something inside. So as you were talking, I was remembering the 2020 event only a few weeks ago, agencytransformation.live, and how proud I am of an event that was meant to be physical that went so well online. So I’m like, you know what? I do believe in being humble and not show off and big-headed, but at the same time, I really do have to continue to celebrate that being the success that it was and acknowledge that it worked. And that was me and the team around me, et cetera. And it’s not being big-headed. It’s actually acknowledging the things you’ve achieved. I think that really does change your own mindset. And you should actually be proud as well about those achievements to be able to share those with other people, because that’s all part of building up the story of you, the brand of you, and also helps encourage people, doesn’t it?
Lee:
With regards to, this guy’s a legend in creating events. We need to talk to this guy about his event software. Eventengine.tv. Sorry, there’s a little ad there.
Nicole:
Absolutely, because I’m happy you had me as a speaker, and generally, I speak regularly with these events, but this was the most interactive event in the networking Of course, it wasn’t a person, but you could jump in from one room to the next. So you should be so proud of that. Often, we are too humble. We are too humble. And this is why I put this in there to make you guys reflect, Okay, what have I done really well? It could be something really, really It could be like, I actually just got through the last month, or it could be, Well, I’ve renovated my garage, or I’ve acquired a new client. Whatever makes you feel good, let’s just bring it out there. Because you know what? I’m sure we have some good stuff we’ve done, so let’s celebrate those quick wins, isn’t it? And a feel good factor we want to instal in people.
Lee:
Absolutely. I mean, let me just do a very quick exercise. I know there are a few people who’ve commented right now who are watching this as a live stream. And I would pick on Mel, and I would say Mel, some of the amazing things that Mel has achieved. It has been one of the most recognisable and beautiful brands I’ve ever seen for funnel packs. Equally, she and Matt together have created a business in funnel packs, which has impacted the lives of countless agency owners around the world, including myself, where I had a very small list and I was able to put one of their funnel packs on my website. It just pops up as an exit intent. And that’s my most converting ever funnel, as it were. And there are tonnes of people joining my list all the time. I don’t actually email them, but I just want to give them to a shout out to say, You guys have created something that you should be very proud of, and they continue to work on it. Nick Gulic first as well, he came on and spoke on our event, and he should be really proud because that talk was phenomenal and was life changing for a lot of people.
Lee:
A lot of people reached out afterwards saying that was amazing because he was teaching about how to sell through teaching, essentially. And he’s now launching a course which people can do. So we’ll put a link to that in the show.
Nicole:
I think he mentioned that because he was brilliant about value. Mel and Matt as a team, I mean, bringing the best of both worlds. And they are so kind. Do you know Matt throughout the whole day was commenting on people’s talks, was invading, and then his whole talk is about how you can be kind. You’re kind. Totally on brand. This is the secret to good personal branding. Absolutely. It’s true to you. It’s not difficult to keep it up. So nick. I want to help people with this exercise.
Lee:
Nick, Neil, Matt, but also Tristan, who I can see in the comments. You guys should be very proud. And I would want to give Tristan a shout out. Tristan is very good and he should be very proud of this. He’s amazing. At showing up for people. And I actually sent him a gift the other day, which says it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been friends, essentially, you’re one of those friends who said that they would be there for you and then proved it. And he continues to prove it every single day. So again, Tristan, if you’re ever thinking of something, thinking, I’m feeling rubbish about myself today, then I’ve just given you a free gift of something that you should be proud of. So that’s how easy it can be, guys, for day two. Holy moly, we’re having fun. We’re getting a bit emotional now, are we?
Nicole:
Shall we go to day three, please? No, I wanted to just say good night to Tristan as well, because I met him the first time at your event and I love this energy. What you get on stage is what you get on real life with him.
Lee:
Yeah, he’s exhausting, aren’t you, Tristan? I need your energy, mate.
Nicole:
Okay, day three. Day three. Now, for both of you who’ve been able to see my last talk, My Hates Transformation Live, and if you haven’t catch it on the video. I’ve launched a new exercise on that, which I like to call my Wunderstar’s Cupcake Stories founder exercise, because I think life is always sweeter when you think in terms of cupcakes. But basically, if you imagine just a beautiful tray of cupcakes, right? You got to have different flavours, different topics. And there’s certain cupcakes you always want to keep to yourself because they’re just so nice, you don’t want to share them. And then there are those which you’re happy to share. Now, if you now think of your cupcakes as stories from your life, from your business, and everything which makes you as a person. On day three, I’m going to ask you three questions. Why do you do what you do? What mistakes have you made? What were the major decisions in your life? And I want you to post them on Post-it notes, or perhaps just have a gif which represents one of your stories. And the reason why I’m asking you this is because it’s really…
Nicole:
Our stories is what makes us unique, right? We’ve known that people trust marketing less. We know there’s a lot of competition, but if we share our stories strategically, we can really stand out in a good way. So this step is really, really, really fundamental for that. So just think about what’s happened to you. Why did you move? Why did you create your business? So I have this very specific question. And do you know when I did that? Because we take it for granted. It’s like, well, yes, so what? I’m from former Eastern Germany. It doesn’t really matter. But what I realised, most of the stories which people were like, wow, you’re from Eastern Germany? I’ve never met someone from Eastern Germany. So by me talking about what it was like to grow up behind the Iron Carton, I’m not giving away anything really private because experience was very similar for many Germans. But I connect with my audience. It’s something which is memorable about me. And this is what I’m hoping to help your community with, is to put a couple of stories. And I work with you guys from your community, so it really, really works.
Nicole:
So I’m looking forward to the stories we’re going to hear. And for those people who don’t want to share the stories, absolutely fine. Post a gif. Let’s have some fun with it. So again, really, It’s really easy. Won’t take us long.
Lee:
I can think of some of the gifs that could be posted as well. And folks, it is really important. If you remember many of the podcasts, especially solo episodes that I’ve done, I will have shared stories with you, which impacted me. So the entire Agency Trailblazer brand was inspired by a story, a journey that I went on back in 2007 during the massive financial, what’s it called, the massive recession, 2007, 2008, and how we had to slowly recover from that for many years It was hugely impactful. It was actually a really stressful time in my life. It wasn’t necessarily positive, but a huge amount of positivity came from it. A huge amount of lessons came from that. And then just one really funny one because the picture is just over here. Hang on a second. This is the point. This is really not relevant, but it is also the fact that you can learn from pretty much anything. But if you want to come onto the live stream, replay later at agencytrialblazer.com/group, if you’re listening to the podcast, you will see my wedding picture. I’ll scan it in. Okay, that’s lovely, isn’t it? But if you look, I actually look like a 12-year-old boy in a suit made for a man because the guy at the shop says, I know your size.
Lee:
I’m like, Don’t you need to measure me? No, I won’t need to measure you. I know exactly your size. Don’t you worry. The lesson there is, don’t trust a big head, because when I put it on on the day, I felt absolutely ridiculous. I had to drill a hole in the belt just to hold the flipping trousers up. It was awful. And then the guy who took all our pictures took pictures from afar, so I couldn’t hide it. Thankfully, my mate showed up who was just training to be a photographer, and he was like, Lee, do you mind if I don’t… I was like, I’ll pay you. He was like, No, I don’t want any money. I just want to take some practise shots. So if they’re all awful, it won’t matter. Thankfully, they were flipping amazing. And he’d cropped in and stuff like that to hide the fact I was in this massive suit. So they’re actually our wedding pictures.
Nicole:
And you work with people who are a couple and who would have gotten married. They can relate to that. So this story totally makes you relatable and approachable, which is what we want.
Lee:
Exactly. So no stories off limits, guys. I’m coming off now, sorry. No stories. Let’s just show you that again. I’ll upload that. My wife’s beautiful. It’s like Beauty and the Beast. And then there’s me losing my hair. That was the other thing as well. I was losing my hair, so I spiked it up. That was very popular in the early 2000s to spike your hair. And I quite like that because I thought it made me look like I wasn’t bolding. But now when I look back at the pictures, I was definitely balding. Anyway, day number four before we descend into madness.
Nicole:
Okay. I’m trying really hard to say. Really focus on time. It’s okay. It’s the day four. Now, so So we’ve got to talk about our idea of customers, right? The people we want to work for, reflecting our niche, the people we know they’ve got great website projects, and we get excited by it. So day four is all about you thinking about your ideal customers and really asking yourself, what are their hopes and their dreams? What do they struggle in their business? What questions do I typically ask you? And we need this information because we want to bring all the storytelling back to them. And I’m asking you to consider this, but actually on the day, you just need to share a gif which reminds you of your ideal audience. And also, if you want to do a bit more work on this, on your identity in your ideal audience, I’m also going to be sharing a free template on that day. I know some people in your community have already I’ve done it for most of my time.
Lee:
Did you say free?
Nicole:
It is totally free because you know what? I generally want people to take actions and to come out of the challenge knowing who their audience is, knowing what bits of their stories they’re happy to share, what they are about, because it’s really going to help their marketing. It’s really going to unleash your power to market yourself better because you’re like, Okay, no, I know what’s okay to share. I’m not saying you have to run wild on socials straight away, but start gently. Have an About page on your app page, perhaps update your LinkedIn profile. I know some guys like to hide, and some ladies in this community.
Lee:
They do. And they had their light under a bushel. But when you were talking about free, during the entire Agency Transformation Live, then every time any of our speakers gave anything away, I started writing, It’s a trap, in the comments.
Nicole:
This is going to be, no one has to sign any- I’m messing. It’s a trap. It’s a Google Sheet. People take a copy of it. Because I generally think, by now people know me. You guys, if you want to be on my Sugarash community, you know where to sign up, you know where to find my YouTube channel. So this is a Google template you can easily fill out. Yes, there are some lollypops in there because you know what? We got to have some fun with it. But it’s no tricks and no traps. No tricks.
Lee:
But someone, please. In fact, I’m googling it now. It’s my favourite gif of all time, and it’s the guy out of… I’ve actually posted it now in the live feed, and it’s from Star Wars. I’ve forgotten the guy’s name, and he sat in the spaceship and he was like, It’s the trap.
Nicole:
I’m just looking at it now.
Lee:
So again, folks, if you’re listening to the podcast, you’ve probably been missing out on the best Facebook group ever. This is like a big advertorial for our Facebook group, isn’t it? Agencytrailblazer.com/group. It’s so cool. Seriously, guys.
Nicole:
It’s so cool because obviously I’m not an expert in your area at all, but I love it how people help each other. However, it’s a great mixture between fun, education, support. So yes, it’s an awesome community. I come into every now and don’t have just to say hello.
Lee:
Every now and again, you’re in it every week. You’re out of the furniture.
Nicole:
People make me feel so welcome. Every now and go, what does that mean? Exactly. Sql code stroke, whatever reference.
Lee:
Sorry, I don’t know what half of it means either. I just, you know.
Nicole:
I just been paid to look good.
Lee:
Day five, what It happens on day 5.
Nicole:
On day 5, we are bringing it all together. Day 5 when it’s all going to happen. Now, on day 5, I want you to have a think about, so what do you know about your own stories? What do you know about your audience? What are their pain points? What stories would really connect with them? And then I want you to imagine your empty version again and come up with a couple of ideas for content you can create to really appeal to your ideal audience. I wanted to say, What will you post that month? I wanted to say, When you post that month, I want you to say when you do that? Because we really want you to take action. And when you post it, tuck us in because we’re going to help your comment go further. We’re going to share it. We’re going to celebrate it. So day five brings it all together. I’m not even actually asking you to create any content. I’m just asking you to commit and to say, these are the two actions I’m going to take. And obviously, if you struggle with anything, I’ll be there every day helping. Lee will be there.
Nicole:
So it’s a great opportunity to try it all out every day. And then if you do get stuck, we can help. But it’s so easy. I don’t think you will get stuck. So that’s safe for me.
Lee:
So the reason why I’m going to take part in this challenge personally is because obviously I’m working on my personal brand. And even years in, I’m still trying to work out how do I continue to show up and how can I leverage a lot of my own past and history and experiences and how can I in a broadcast that in a way that’s going to appeal to the right people? So this is perfect for me. What I like about what we’re doing, and we had conversation about this, didn’t we? About making it super easy is that each and every day is simply just pop in a funny gif, record a video if you want to. I know Tristan will probably record a video every day because he’s great at that. Equally, it could be just some bullet points, but it’s just helping you think every day. And then at the end of it, that hopefully will inspire you to create some content. And what I really believe in is accountability as well. So the reason why we’re doing this is a five-day thing is so that you will learn one small piece, something small each and every day you’re going to learn and you’re going to write something down, you’re going to commit it to either a gif or to a sentence.
Lee:
And then on day five, you’re going to commit to doing something, which means you will be able to create that content, whatever that’s going to be, over the next month. And then we’re going to be keeping our eye on that to see whether or not you then posted it because we do what… Like Nicole said, we want to be able to celebrate that you are able to go through the five days with us and then create some content. So you are absolutely allowed to spam the comments feed for day five, like Billy with all of the content that you have created. And we will celebrate that content with you as well.
Nicole:
It feels me with joy to see people take action. And I know once you start posting something, perhaps would have been out of your comfort zone previously, you are bound to get positive feedback. And then you do more of it, right? Because you see that it really works. It gets you notice by the people you like to work with. And what more motivation do we need? So I’ve applied all of these steps to my own branding as well. I used to be always like, God, you’re so professional. I can’t show much of myself. And then I start to think about, actually, I’m working with working parents, so we’re going for the same pain points I am. So one day on LinkedIn, on that scary platform, obviously not so scary now, I posted a picture of my son, my mum, we were doing something. And that post totally blew up because it allowed other working parents to actually know it’s okay sometimes to struggle with a juggle. And it’s something so simple. And it’s only by going through with who’s my audience, what bits of my stories they want to share. I still discovered that. And I wanted to enable everyone to do the same.
Lee:
